Living and Breathing Breathe Carolina

If you enjoy Electronic/Dance music, then I have a band for you: BREATHE CAROLINA.

If there was ever just one band that deserved the TURN IT UP TO TEN award, that band would be Breathe Carolina.

Breathe Carolina began in 2007 with vocalists David Schmitt and Kyle Even. They started Breathe Carolina on Garage Band just for fun and put up a Myspace and their fanbase grew rapidly.

In November of 2007, Breathe Carolina came out with their first EP, which they called "Gossip". All of the EP's songs were added to their first full-length album, "It's Classy, Not Classic" except for one, "Don't Forget: Lock The Doors". This song is their first: the song that was around before they even knew their band was going to become something. They performed this song for Houston on their EZ Bronz tour, not expecting anyone to know the song and were surprised to hear almost everyone singing along. Breathe Carolina has its diehard fans, the ones who have been there since the beginning, and those fans are the ones that are going to be there with them until the very, very end.

Breathe Carolina's full-length album, "It's Classy, Not Classic", was released in 2008 and featured songs such as "Show Me Yours", "Lovely" and "That's Classy". This album is very straight-to-the-point with what they want to say ("Did you really think i meant every word that i said? When we're lying in your bed head to head and i can't get enough?" from Classified). The album also gives the listeners a little gift: the song "Lovely". "Lovely" is an amazing representation of what Breathe Carolina brings to the table in regards to music ("Oh no, my heart is getting heavy, was I was forward? I kinda had the feeling that it's over, but know I know that I'm crazy (I think that I'm going nowhere) So scream loud and look at me way down, I know that you're afraid, I'll hold you close and never, ever let you go...scenery is nothing more than poetry").

If you go to the music section at any Best Buy or Target, you will find Breathe Carolina's 2009 album, "Hello Fascination", on the shelves. "Hello Fascination" is less pure dance than their other two releases. Songs from this album have been featured on shows like "Jay Leno"(The song "Hello Fascination" was used for the commercial) and The City ("I'm The Type Of Person To Take It Personal" was used in the season finale.)

In the last three years, Breathe Carolina has gained a fanbase larger than they probably ever expected. No matter how many fans venues have to turn away at the door and regarless of if the show is sold out or not, Kyle always makes it a point to come out to the merch tables. Sometimes right after the show is over and sometimes at midnight, but he always does. "OH MAN!" he said March 12, 2010, after learning that was my sixth time seeing the band, "I have to remember you! Thank you so much! This means so much to us!" Breathe Carolina fans will come and go with time, but i know that one thing is true: I will always be one of the number one fans (NOT the #1 groupie)!

Breathe Carolina is a band that I hope goes very, very far because of their performing and musical abilities. They have progressed so much since 2007, and they can only get better from here.

The Medic Droid!

The Medic Droid is band that started in 2005 by an unstoppable trio: Chris Donathan, Hector Bagnod and Johnny Chavez (better known as Johnny Droid). If you have ever heard of The Medic Droid, you have most likely heard of them for their very successful single, "Fer Sure".

Johnny left the Techno/Power-pop band, but that did not stop Hector and Chris from keeping the band going.

The Medic Droid's first and only album, "What's Your Medium?", was released in 2008. While The songs presented on the album are fantastic in their own ways, the album as a whole failed to live up to the success of "Fer Sure".

Chris and Hector toured in 2008 with bands such as Breathe Carolina, The White Tie Affair, Chronic Future, Hyper Crush and InnerPartySystem.

On December 8th, 2008, The Medic Droid graced the stages of Warehouse Live in Houston, Texas. Hector came out shirtless and soaking wet and Chris came onstage not only late, but also completely hammered*. The show was very personal and despite the state of the vocalist, was very, very good.

Exactly eight days later the band announced they were breaking up due to some troubles they were having.

Although The Medic Droid has been broken up for over a year, they are still around on iTunes, on Myspace and in the lives of the people they have touched with their music.

Recommended Songs: "Fer Sure", "The Killer Anna" & "Keeping Up With The Joneses"
Note: The only song that is COMPLETELY explicit is Fer Sure, I only recommend this to people who are into that sort of thing.

*=Thanks to Ivan for the word "hammered",so the typical "drunk" or "smashed" wouldn't have to be used.

From Food To Numbers: >9000

If you frequent concerts in Houston, Texas you most likely have heard of The Blue Poptarts (or as they are now called, Over 9000). The experimental loose-rock, solidly alternative band changed its name a few months ago and gained a new drummer in the process.

Over 9000 is a fan-friendly band that obviously enjoys playing shows, recording new songs and communicating with fans via Myspace, Twitter and Formspring.

It was an unexpected surprise that The Blue Poptarts were the opening band at the Warped Tour 2009 After Party, which is where I saw the phenomenon for the first time. The performance should have gone in history books because it was so fun-filled and they rocked harder than some of the bands lined up after them. What really stuck in my mind was the fact that the bassist, Chris Walzel, was so funny and friendly. It made me want to look them up later, and another surprise was that their music was so representative of their personality: it's crazy fun. It's candy for your ears!

Their lyrics used to be not-so-serious but unique and creative ("Crusin' down the street in my tight jeans, slappin a h** cause I am really mean, I'm reppin the streets from the east to the west, I will carve my name, uh, into your chest. So I got my gat, and shot this fool, he ran over my cat man what the f**k would you do, I'm reppin all the colors just like them homos, f**k that s**t I'm a rainbow cholo" from It Ain't Easy Being Gangster) and they have recently started to possess more meaning ("So tell me again, about when you know when,'Cause I'm stuck in days dreaming, Of ghosts and best friends. But when best friends are dead, & the day's at it's end, I'll have these memories to keep, As I drift off to sleep" From You Can't Ask Questions During Movie Night).

Over 9000 is one of the best parts about living in the Houston area and their fresh talent is sure to get them far.

Recommended songs: "All the Dinosaurs are Dead", "YouCan'tAskQuestionsDuringMovieNight", and "It Ain't Easy Being Gangster"
Note: I sent a demo of me playing drums to be considered to be the drummer.

The Sun The Moon The Sky!

If you aren't into posthardcore or electronica/dance music, chances are you will like the soothing sounds of The Sun The Moon The Sky.

The Sun The Moon The Sky(or SMS) began a near two years ago by frontman Ronnie Johnson. Ronnie wanted to create a different sound than what his then-band, Forever In The End, was playing. In the last few months, SMS has grown from just Ronnie to bassist Eric Rubio and drummer David Rosales. Together, the three have produced songs and a message far deeper than most bands of this generation.

Ronnie has worked hard in the last few years to get his name out there, not for the fame, but "spread the love around" (as taken from the song The Color Of Sound). When SMS was just a one-man gig, Ronnie put forth the album "And The Hope You Left Us With" with songs such as "A Work Of Heart" and "The Color of Sound" that promotes peace, love and sharing your love in all the right ways. On May 17th (Ronnie's Birthday), SMS's highly anticipated album "Till We Have Faces"(named after the book by C.S. Lewis) is due to be released.

Although The Sun The Moon The Sky members are still pretty young, they seem to have it all figured out. "We will all be something," Ronnie says and then smiles, "[it's] lyrics to Till We Have Faces. The Song." Ronnie says he gets most of his inspiration from his favorite bands: Thrice, Manchester Orchestra and As Cities Burn.

The Sun The Moon The Sky will continue to spread the love until the dream of being able influence everyone with words and be able to support their families is accomplished.

"It's more than just cheap thrills and laughs. We have a bigger purpose" - Ronnie Johnson.

Mid Day Mania

Hailing from the little town of Rosenberg, Texas is Mid Day Silence, a posthardcore project. Mid Day Silence, better known as Ivan to friends and family, began in 2007 and has been sharing his songs with his following ever since.

Ivan Morin is not new to the music scene. He has been the screamer for his band, Xatarus, since late 2004 and has been playing guitar ever since he can remember. Ivan's music is a good representation of his personality: mysterious, interesting and young yet mature. The songs have a hardcore vibe, backed with guitar solos and an electronic feel.

Mid Day Silence's lyrics range from serious and deep("on the sands of winter beaches/
I proposed this failing night then I broke down/ one knee styled/ I'm forbidden to speak again" from Miss Catastrophic)to downright silly ("save me, I'm f***ing crazy,
theres zebras eating baby Martians talking toasters with eyes of ruby's its a giant lobster with the head of Rick James!" from There's A Hippopotamus Under My Bed).

At shows, Ivan is friendly to all and never turns away a friendly face: "...but when i see cool people," he says, "we get awesome."

Mid Day Silence's first full length album, Gravity, is now available as of yesterday. The cover of the album has a dinosaur on it, and on the back is Mid Day Silence's tagline "Be Cool". For more information about the album, see the band's site, located below.

The Snaüs Cycle

Joshua Andrew is a multi-faceted music man. He plays keytar and guitar! His project goes by the name of The Spin Cycle and falls into the Electronic/Dance genre of music.

Joshua has toured with Breathe Carolina as their keytar player since the band began. Now at 22, his one-man band is taking off. The Spin Cycle produces a sharp beat with lyrics that capture the soul.

The Spin Cycle's first EP, The Ink Victory, came out in 2007 and his first album, Couture, came out January 2010. Although there has been quite some time between the album releases, the songs remain true to their dance roots.

Joshua is a fan of giraffes, giraffe soap, giraffe keychains, Lady Gaga and Houston's own Sparkles Burgers. "My giraffe keychain broke!" Joshua said at Houston Warped Tour 2009 and the very next day smiled big when I gave him a foam giraffe that he now sleeps with it under his pillow. This proves that Joshua is good to his loyal fans (March 12, 2010 was my sixth time seeing him alongside Breathe Carolina).

When Joshua was still a teen, he was accepted into Berklee College Of Music with a $15,000 scholarship but he declined the offer to be in a band (Dear Army...) that died with its drummer. Luck brought him to Breathe Carolina and The Spin Cycle, where he uses his talent to the best of his ability.

The Spin Cycle is a band that has a bright future because of the colorful and talented man behind it.

"I offer danceable electro-pop to those who will listen, and will continue to do so until the circuits and wires inside my synthesizers wear irreparably thin. By then, the whole world will be dancing" - Joshua Andrew

If there were words that I could use to describe the feeling inside that I get when I hear the words "Joshua Andrew", I would use them. Most teenage girls that are into his sort of thing would say the same, but it has been two long years that i have been dedicated to him (April 20,2008), and the feeling is still around. It is my hope that everyone gets to experience Joshua's music atleast once in their lifetime and that he has the same effect on them that he has on me. I would love for Joshua Andrew to know I'm irreversably altered by him and all the little things (like the soap and foam) will never, ever make up for everything he has given me.

Goodness Gracious, It's Garrett!

Among all the Top 40 Radio Stations and genres of music out there, lies a one-man glam-pop electro band that goes by the name of Boy Talks Trash.

Boy Talks Trash, known by fans as Garrett Ecstasy, walked out of Blood on the Dance Floor late 2009 due to disagreements with the other member. Not wanting to disappoint his fans or give up the music career he worked hard to build, Garrett started creating music immediately after, keeping his fans updated through Myspace Bulletins and blogs. Months after the break up, Boy Talks Trashed emerged covered in bokeh and glitter.

Boy Talks Trash introduces a side of Garrett many of his fans had never seen before. While he screamed his lungs out in Blood on the Dance Floor, he sings his way through every song he has posted.

When Garrett toured as Blood on the Dance Floor, Garrett was one of the most amicable and easy get along with guys. Garrett Ecstasy has yet to tour as Boy Talks Trash but when he does, we should expect it to be fabulous and friendly.

Many fans were worried Garrett wouldn't come back as strong as before, but he has surprised the ones who stuck by him through it all.

Recommended song: "Soundtrack to a car fire"
